The consortium meets 5–10 times over the course of a year, and each session
includes working with ASCD Faculty members, problem solving, networking
activities, and action planning. Between sessions, participants complete assignments
focused on implementing practices. ASCD Faculty members, Professional
Development Coaches, and ASCD staff are available for ongoing virtual coaching
Additionally, district or state personnel participate in learning with ASCD Faculty
members that is focused on supporting the implementation of content and effective
professional development practices.
Teacher Leader Model. The teacher leader model builds capacity within a school
or district. Teacher leader teams work with ASCD Faculty members to learn content
in-depth and to learn how to plan, lead, and implement effective professional
development that supports content.
ASCD Faculty members support the development of teacher leaders by providing
content workshops, model lessons, curriculum development support, and school-based coaching and by observing demonstration classrooms. In addition, teacher
leader teams work with ASCD Professional Development Coaches to develop their
expertise in adult learning and effective school-based professional learning practices.
School Improvement Coach Model. The school improvement coach model is
designed to build capacity at an individual school. ASCD Faculty members work
with individual schools on specific instructional and leadership approaches based on
the results of a needs assessment. Under the guidance of the ASCD Faculty member,
selected teacher leaders and the school-level administrators learn concepts and
strategies customized for their school and develop a plan for implementation.
To support implementation, ASCD Faculty members also coach the principal and
administrative team in instructional leadership.
